The usual disclaimers apply.  I own nothing, just borrowing the characters for a bit...

This is a rather sappy, disjointed tale at the moment.  And it isn't complete, so if you don't like to read unfinished work, this isn't for you :)  The problem is that I was trying to go too many directions at once.  I've tried to straighten it out, but have no idea if I've succeeded (I am the first to admit I'm better at reading fanfic than writing it myself.)  Anyway, here it is...

Allegiance - Prologue

As she heard the shower start in the bathroom, Miss Parker snuggled lazily in the queen-sized bed.  Most of the covers had long ago been relegated to the floor.  She slowly opened her eyes and glanced around the nondescript hotel room.  Her observant eyes took in the disheveled bedding as well as the items of clothing scattered haphazardly between the door and the bed.  There was no doubt about it.  All the evidence pointed to a night of thorough debauchery.
And what a night it had been!
She smiled, stretching languorously, and started to contemplate joining her lover in the shower when the ringing of her cell phone shocked her out of the pleasant idea.  She snatched the phone off the nightstand and pressed the applicable button.
       “What?” she barked.
“Now is that any way to greet your loving brother?” Lyle asked merrily.
“This better be important,” she responded irritably.
“Of course it is.” Lyle replied.  “Every thing about our as-yet-unsuccessful hunt for the oh-so-elusive Jarod is important.”
Miss Parker’s senses kicked into high gear.  “So why are you calling me?  You know Raines’...our father’s...new rule.  We work separately and whoever brings Jarod in first gets to live.” her voice dripped with sarcasm and disbelief.  ‘How could she actually be related to these people?’ she asked herself silently.
“Tsk, tsk, sis.”  Lyle scolded.  “I’m sure if we work together that Daddy would understand.”
“So I can find him then have you stab me in the back thus taking all the credit?  I don’t think so.”
“Fine!  It’s your loss.” Lyle replied easily.  Too easily.  “I just wanted to confirm you’ll be back form this...vacation of yours tomorrow.”
Miss Parker silently cursed fate for giving her this psychotic maniac for a twin brother.  Problem was he was an intelligent psychotic maniac.  “Of course I’ll be back,” she said.  “I took a lousy three day weekend in Philadelphia, Lyle, not a month off to tour Europe.”
“Need I remind you that capturing Jarod is the priority here, not visiting the Liberty Bell.”
She sighed loudly into the phone, “Really?” she asked sarcastically.  “Need I remind you it was Raines - our father - who suggested this little trip?” she closed her eyes and grimaced with pain at the thought that Mr. Raines was her...their father.  She knew he’d suggested she take some time away from the Centre for less than altruistic purposes.  She wasn’t yet sure just what those reasons were.  The again, she had her own, very personal, reasons for going along with his plan.
“No, I was in his office, too.”  She heard the rustling of papers and wondered what her brother was up to.  “Are you coming back tomorrow or not?”
“Yes,” she tensed when she heard the water stop.  “I won’t be in until after ten, though.  My flight doesn’t get in until 9:15.”
The man who stepped into the room was wearing nothing but a bath-towel strung loosely around his hips and was a prime example of the masculine physique.  Her mouth watered just looking at him.  To say the least, it was an incongruous reaction given her current conversation.  “Send a car to pick me up and don’t be late.”
“Good,” Lyle said.  “I’ll see you first thing when you get back.  The Triumvirate has a special project I need to start on and I’ll need to brief you as quickly as possible on everything you’ve missed.”  He hung up before his sister could fully reflect on the fact that the usually secretive second-in-command of the Centre would volunteer so much information.
The thought was pushed out of her mind when the man standing before her dropped his towel to the floor and knelt over her on the bed.  He kissed her senseless before drawing back.  “Don’t worry, honey,” he said simply.  “I left enough stuff in Indianapolis to keep Mr. Lyle and the sweepers very busy.”
She looked tenderly at her husband and sighed.  “I hope so, Jarod.  I hope so.”
